The time for our annual Kickstarter is quickly approaching and this year we'll be raising funds for Terror in the Skies and MOMO: The Missouri Monster. We’ve been getting a lot of questions about the involvement of On the Trail of Bigfoot in this year’s Kickstarter. It WILL be a part of the Kickstarter as a reward and more than likely a poster or two will be included as a reward.

However, the project has already been funded so we won’t be including it in the title of the Kickstarter description since that would be a little disingenuous. BUT you’ll have to back in the first 7 days to get your name in the credits (be sure to attend our Facebook Event Page so you get reminders!) Check out the trailer below!

We'll be announcing rewards included in this Kickstarter (aside from the DVDs, of course) over the few weeks. We're excited to announce that the official STM Crew Member Hat is FINALLY a part of the swag you can get when you become a backer. Don’t forget, the campaign launches on Kickstarter on February 7th! We'll be kicking it off with a launch party live from our new production office. Be sure to tune into Facebook or Instagram so you can join us as we talk about the upcoming productions, rewards, and other behind the scenes fun.

Not sure how Kickstarter works? The most important thing to keep in mind is that our Kickstarters are NOT a donation. The funds that we raise get funneled back into our productions and the rewards backers receive. We work very hard to make sure that backers receive the most bang for their buck and that we're coming up with cool new ideas for rewards each year.

Remember, we can’t make movies without you!

For decades the small town of Louisiana, Missouri has run from the shadow of its most terrifying secret. In 1972, something stalked the forested area of Marzolf Hill, killing dogs and leaving bizarre, three-toed tracks. As strange lights in the night sky began to accompany sightings of the creature dubbed“MOMO”, armed posses and investigators combed the woods around town.

One year later a film crew set out to make a movie based on the true events. Created on a shoe-string budget, the lucky few who saw it have called it “the most terrifying Sasquatch film ever seen”. The creature-feature was forgotten and lost to time... until now.

Next Halloween, the documentary filmmaking of Small Town Monsters meets the drive-in Horror stylings of 70s cinema. Witness the melding of horror with reality in... MOMO: The Missouri Monster.

Be sure to check back here and on our Facebook Event Page for all the details about our rewards and our annual launch party!

Adrienne
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01314645568124791425noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5357625198532716019.post-66103173861698899722018-12-18T10:36:00.000-08:002019-01-09T11:53:54.171-08:00New Production Office TourIt's been about two months since we moved into our new office in Downtown Wadsworth. We're all settled in and have even had the opportunity to film some interviews for On the Trail of... Bigfoot here.

It's a small space, but we thought we'd give a little tour.

Finally, we have some room to showcase props from our movies (like the miniatures used in Flatwoods Monster), and items we've bought from other cyrptid fans.

We're happy to say that we now have a dedicated space for audio recording. This has already come in very useful in recording Seth and Mark's new podcast Monsteropolis (you should check it out if you haven't already). The room has also become home to some of the newspaper articles we've kept over the years.

And of course, we also have a room dedicated to editing and all of our post-production work. This space was also recently used to film interview our last few interviews On the Trail of... Bigfoot. Now... back to editing!

We're rearing the end of October with a lot of accomplishments under our belt. The Bray Road Beast was released earlier this month. It's now an Amazon best seller for over three weeks with peaks where it hit #1 New Release in horror and documentary! A very special thank you to our 2018 Kickstarter backers and all of you who've supported Small Town Monsters and The Bray Road Beast film.

In other news, Small Town Monsters began moving our production offices into a new space in Downtown Wadsworth last week. We're still in the process of moving, but the end is in sight! We apologize for any delays in email responses, etc. that the move may cause. We're very excited about this new space and the growth that it allows. I'm sure we'll be sharing more information and photos as soon as we're settled.

Squeezing in one last big announcement for the month, we revealed the official poster (above) for Terror in the Skies earlier today, artwork once again by the great Sam Shearon. Terror is officially in post-production and we're very excited about it. You can expect this film in the Spring of 2019 and you can get involved in the project by backing our 2019 Kickstarter next February. For additional details (and handy reminders) about the Kickstarter, check out our Facebook Event Page here.

Let me first start off by saying that Lake Champlain is massive. It’s actually staggering how large of a lake it is. Hundreds of miles long and stretching as far as the eye can see. This seemed sort of daunting to me at first as I was worried if I’d be able to capture the nature of what Lake Champlain is accurately given its size. With that in mind I know I needed an arsenal of filmmaking tech on hand just to capture this natural wonder alone. If you’re a filmmaking/gear nerd, you’ll probably enjoy next part more than most!

My lineup included the Canon 5D Mark III DLSR with a Canon 24-105 f/4L lens, a Canon 70D DSLR with assorted lenses, a DJI Phantom 3 Standard quadcopter, a DJI Osmo gimbal with 4K camera, a GoPro Hero 3, a zoom audio recorder with Sony lavaliere microphone and a whole host of tripods and other gadgets. I made sure to use equipment I would be comfortable with, while still capturing stunning video with relative ease on the go.

The Canon 5D was ideal for the variety of interviews I conducted as well as for some great supplemental footage or “b-roll” as we film types like to call it. Most of my main interviews were done with the lake as a backdrop, something I consciously had hoped to do. Shooting interviews outside can be difficult, especially with constantly changing light and uncontrollable environmental sounds, but I’m pleased to say they turned out quite well and the Canon 5D held up very well. The Canon 70D I mainly used for b-roll as well as for timelapses. A great deal of the time was spent on various boats while filming and for that the DJI Osmo gimbal was the most useful. It allowed me to capture some stunningly smooth shots while on a boat zooming around bay’s and inlets!

As for the DJI Phantom 3 drone, it would be the most useful piece of filmmaking tech in terms of capturing the expansive nature of Lake Champlain. I could have filmed for days on end just with the drone in various scenic areas, but even the times I flew it between interviews and other b-roll, it truly gave me a cinematic edge in capturing the lake itself. Months later I actually upgraded drones to the DJI Mavic Pro, which I got to test out flying over a frozen Champlain bay back in January, which also looked absolutely epic from the air.

No documentary about Champ would be complete without underwater footage and as a result I decided to use GoPro action cameras for that purpose. While I was a bit on the fence about getting some kind of rig for taking the Canon 5D underwater, I’m glad I stuck with the GoPro’s ultimately. Lake Champlain is notoriously murky and algae blooms in the summer certainly don’t help with visibility. Most of the GoPro footage either attached to a scuba diver or lowered into the water with bait had trouble showing much of anything aside from murky mucky greenish water. Champ sure got lucky in that regard!

Something I learned very quickly was how diverse of a natural area Lake Champlain was. It’s not just a big lake, it has very distinct geographical areas including cliffs, caves, expansive marshes, “bayou’s”, bays and more. It’s hard to imagine at times but I tried my best to really capture some of the striking visual tones I witnessed on Lake Champlain. If anything I hope On the Trail of…Champ can inspire anybody out there, cryptid enthusiast or not, to visit this wonderful ancient lake with so much to offer aside from just one of North America’s greatest mysteries. Just get out there, explore, have fun and don’t forget a camera!

Over the course of the four weekends I filmed On the Trail of…Champ, I had the fortune of interviewing countless people involved in the mystery.

I interviewed about half a dozen eyewitnesses who all had seen something unusual in the waters of Lake Champlain. While some of the interviews were planned ahead of time, others were spontaneous but all of them were fascinating. My pre-planned phone interview with Sandra Mansi (of the famous 1977 Mansi photography) for example turned out wonderful and I believe that to have been her last formal Champ related interview before her recent passing. My interview with Frank Horton, who turned out to be one of my favorite eyewitnesses, was totally spontaneous. While I was filming the giant Champ parade float at the 2017 Champ Day event, he approached me as he lived right across from the faux Champ and we struck up a conversation, leading to an invigorating interview shortly afterwards.

Among the eyewitnesses I interviewed there was a wide variety of when their sightings took place, ranging as far back as the 1950’s up until a few weeks prior to filming and everything in between. That really helped me realize that whatever was going on was not an isolated phenomenon that occurred sporadically. Of course through research I realized sightings of “Champ” date back quite far as well.

Aside from the eyewitnesses, by far the most important interviews were with the three most prolific Champ investigators, Scott Mardis, Katy Elizabeth and William Dranginis. These three arguably made the series what it is and more broadly gave the search for Champ human faces and plenty of personality. Their interviews were filled with years of experience searching for the mystery of Lake Champlain, endless facts about Champ and Lake Champlain as well as their own sightings and encounters. These folks exhibit some serious dedication and ingenuity in this particular quest for the unknown.

With these researchers, comprising of the Mardis-Dranginis Research team and Champ Search (Katy Elizabeth) respectively, I accompanied them as they scoured deep sections of the lake, combed through the many Champlain marshes at night and much more. It was truly adventure in every sense of the word as we battled with unpredictable weather and the simple difficulty of researching on a large body of water. Ultimately On the Trail of…Champ is as much as a story about Scott, Katy and Will as it is about the famous denizen of the lake.

Finally, for the last set of interviews for the series I spoke with local people that were involved with Champ beyond sightings or research. These were people like Lorraine Franklin, owner of Champ’s Trading Post, a Vermont based gift shop themed around Champ of course. This type of interview gave the Champ mythos a deeper meaning and cultural roots in the communities surrounding Lake Champlain. This included the Vermont Lake Monsters, Vermont’s minor league baseball team, which fully embraced the monster legend.

Combining all these types of interviews was something I felt needed to be done to demonstrate the full scale of the mystery of Champ. Alongside many historical facts about Champ and the lake, the only thing I needed to ensure was that I could truly capture the alluring beauty of Lake Champlain. Luckily I had some serious filmmaking tech at my disposal.

To be continued…

We have some exciting news! We've released the final trailer for our upcoming feature Bray Road Beast, and we celebrated by launching our DVD pre-orders!

If you aren't already familiar with the general details of the story, check out the synopsis below.

In 1989 a country road outside of the Wisconsin town of Elkhorn became the center of a media frenzy unlike anything the world had ever seen. “People were seeing, what looked to them, like a werewolf…” said Linda Godfrey the newspaper reporter who brought the story to light in a local publication called “The Week”. In fact, many people -locals and out-of-towners alike- had sightings and encounters with the creature that came to be known as The Beast of Bray Road. Many of these sightings were largely ignored or under-reported… that is, until October 5th when the new documentary film, The Bray Road Beast will unlock decades of history relating to “werewolf” sightings around the US.
The Bray Road Beast DVD also includes a short, behind-the-scenes featurette that takes you to Elkhorn with the STM crew.

The Bray Road Beast features narration by Lyle Blackburn, animated sequences by Santino Vitale (who also created our creature costume) and Chris Scalf with illustrations by Matt Harris, Brandon Scalf and Brian Serway. Music by Brandon Dalo and Chris Dudley. Director of photography was Zac Palmisano (with cinematography by Santino) some assistance from Andrew Peterson (of Midwest Mysteries) and sound design by Jason Utes (also our production manager).

Behind the scenes footage on the dvd was shot by Jason and Mark Matzke who also co-wrote the script, and our Key Grip was Andy Matzke. Posters were created by Sam Shearon and Adrienne Breedlove who also produced the movie. Christy Williams plays Doris Gipson, Adrienne plays Lori Endrizzi and Jason Utes plays the beast.

Huge thanks to all of our Kickstarter backers including the executive producers Rod Fielder, Tim Lancaster, Theresa Tramel, and Dwight Bishop. An extra special thanks to Morgan Hazel and Forest Hazel who backed the entire years worth of STM projects at the series executive producer level.

Pre-order your copy now and get it on or before 10-5-18!

In the spring of 2017, this On the Trail of…Champ journey began. My buddy Seth Breedlove and I, had been discussing doing some sort of collaborative effort on behalf of Small Town Monsters for a while.

I've always been a big fan of lake monsters.

I’ve always been a big fan of lake monsters. Like most people it was Loch Ness and the “Nessie” monster that I was familiar with. In 2015 I traveled to Loch Ness for a few days and as a result created one of my first cryptozoological documentaries, which was called Mystery at Loch Ness. In fact it’s that very Loch Ness documentary that brought Seth and I together, as he had noticed it on YouTube and contacted me in hopes of showing it at his Minerva Monster Day event in 2016.

I had always heard about Champ or “America’s Loch Ness Monster” as it is sometimes referred to, but I wasn’t too familiar with the mystery overall. Strange considering I grew up a few hours from Lake Champlain while knowing more about Loch Ness across the Atlantic. It’s safe to say that the idea of a Champ documentary had been on my radar for some time but various factors came into play during the spring that ultimately led to the project.

Casual conversations with Champ researcher William Dranginis informed me about the annual research expedition he conducted with fellow researcher Scott Mardis. There came one point where Will extended an invite to join them on their expedition to film and document the search. I quickly consulted with Seth and somewhere along the lines this gave birth to On the Trail of…Champ as a documentary mini-series, an idea Seth had been toying around with as a new avenue for Small Town Monsters.

From there the brief pre-production stage began. I knew a project of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible to film in one weekend, so I figured a few weekends throughout the summer would give me plenty of time to get around the Lake and interview as many folks as possible. I planned to see how the first weekend of filming would go with accompanying the Mardis-Dranginis expedition and take it from there.
If you follow us on our various social media platforms (if you don't - you should), you've probably already seen the release of the first official teaser for Bray Road Beast. If you haven't seen it yet, stop reading right now and watch it!

"In the early 1990's a rural Wisconsin community called Elkhorn was at the center of a series of real-life werewolf sightings. As local reporter, Linda Godfrey, began her investigations into the "Beast of Bray Road", other reports from around the country, and soon, the world, began flooding in. For the subsequent three decades, the Beast of Bray Road has been the most infamous Wisconsin resident.
In their seventh film (and third feature-length documentary), Small Town Monsters takes you on an in-depth exploration of the "dogman" phenomenon. From the eerie back roads of Wisconsin, the the fields and villages of Europe, sightings of upright canids go back centuries. But is there more to these sightings than simply misidentifications of known animals or a hidden species of wolf?Prepare for the ultimate journey into the dark side of Cryptozoology, as The Bray Road Beast uncovers a secret history to the subject that touches on everything from the occult to ancient wolf-like beings with hidden knowledge. Coming October 5th."

This film is shaping up to be our darkest yet, and by no decision of our own. When Seth returned from the shoot in Wisconsin, the first thing he told me is, "This is a lot creepier than we realized." Well, that's one way to put it.

I've been watching bits and pieces of the movie come together during the editing, and I have to say, this one is unsettling. The entire atmosphere of the movie oozes a certain feeling of unease and the re-enactments and effects that have been shot thus far only add to that sinister mood.

Also revealed today is the official one sheet for the film, designed by Adrienne Breedlove (hey - that's me). The title card and font were created by Zac Palmasano, who is also the Director of Photography for the film. We were a lot of hats around here, folks.
We're approaching the midway point of the year and also the release of our second production for 2018. The release On the Trail of... Champ is just a few weeks away and we couldn't be more excited.

Pre-orders are live in our shop and our manufacturer is pressing DVDs as we speak. If you haven't claimed a copy yet, make sure you head to shop.smalltownmonsters.com to do that.
After watching the whole mini-series in one sitting I have to say that my love for lake monsters, Champ in particular, has only grown. Aleksandar has created a beautiful, education, and (most importantly) interesting look at the Lake Champlain monster, it's researchers, witnesses, and the town it surrounds.

I hope that you check out this project and that you enjoy it just as much as I have. While you're waiting for your copy, check out this interview we recently did with Frightday.

Adrienne here. 2017 was truly a landmark year for Small Town Monsters. We released two new films (The Mothman of Point Pleasant, Invasion on Chestnut Ridge), had our most successful release to date, and appeared on a Japanese television show. We signed a distribution deal with Terror Films and received wide-digital-release for Boggy and Mothman in November (Invasion to follow soon).

We were able to bring new creative talent to the STM team, adding CGI, animation, and stop motion to our new productions. These elements have opened a new door to storytelling we didn't have in the past, and we're excited to see them enhance the films.

Our production company also saw new growth in 2017, experimenting with new productions to add to our catalog. We teamed up with Director Aleksandar Petakov for the first installment of our new series "On the Trail of..." (to be released in 2018), and we started the weekly series "Small Town Monsters Presents: CaseFiles" (available on Amazon and YouTube).

All of these projects, of course, were made possible by our Kickstarter last January. As many STM fans will know, each year we raise funds through Kickstarter to help offset travel, production, equipment, and crew costs. All to ensure we can tell these stories in the best way possible. We also put a large portion of the money raised back into rewards for our backers, because at the end of the day the most important things to us are the stories we tell and who we tell them to.

In a few weeks we'll launch our 2018 Kickstarter. We have big plans for 2018 including the release of The Flatwoods Monster, Bray Road Beast, and On the Trail of... Champ. We also have some unannounced projects we're pretty excited about, and a few potential new ventures if time and funds allow. All-in-all 2018 looks to be another exciting year of growth for Small Town Monsters.

Thanks to you all for your continued support.
The little-short-that-could debuted at a Bigfoot conference in Ohio to much fanfare in Mid-May 2015, and would have its’ “world premiere” (a status I bristle at) in Minerva in early June. Behind the scenes, the making of the film was a light-hearted, easy-going deal.

The crew, made up of my friend, Nathan Newcomer, Brandon Dalo, two acquaintances that ran a startup production company called Twisted Tree, and myself had spent the summer, and Autumn filming the movie. Of course, I’d been neck-deep in the Minerva case since 2013 when I’d first started investigating it for myself. I’d become familiar with many of the original witnesses and people connected to the case like Barbara Galloway prior to ever shooting one second of our eventual documentary.

Going into the making of Minerva Monster I had a clear idea of what the story would be like and which aspects we would focus on, and I had this sort of vague idea that I wanted the movie to “feel” like something you’d have seen on an old episode of In Search Of. But I knew jack-all about the actual logistics of filmmaking; none of us did, a fact which is apparent when you watch the movie. So here we were filming interviews and b-roll near Minerva, Ohio in the late summer of 2015.

The turning point for us came when Howe Cayton agreed to speak with us about his recollections of what had happened to his family in the summer of 1978. Suddenly, what had originally been conceived of as a 20 minute YouTube short film became a much meatier project. Though we still couldn’t foresee where this would all lead, we did begin to think maybe this little movie could go further than we’d initially thought.

In the early half of 2015 I began contacting local media in hopes of garnering some attention for Minerva Monster. The goal was to gain enough notoriety that when we launched a crowdfunding campaign to help fund post-production we’d have no trouble reaching our goal. Turned out, the press loves Bigfoot. Over the whole of 2015 we were featured in over 70 separate newspaper articles, one of which ended up hitting the AP Wire and running in papers across the country. The Animal Planet blog featured a story on us, local tv stations were discussing the film during the evening news and radio stations in Stark County began taking phone calls from people claiming to have seen the monster for themselves.

The truth is, everyone involved in the making of the movie was convinced we would have some sort of network television deal by the time the movie came out in May. We were taking phone calls and emails from production houses and word on the wind was that Destination America had an interest in us. Of course, here we are, two years later and aside from a brief run that Beast of Whitehall enjoyed on a small network in NY State, none of our films have been embraced by a television audience. Some of that is due to my decision not to give up control of Small Town Monsters and some is due to not getting the right offer.

Minerva Monster’s premiere at the conference was attended by close to 500 people, a feat which none of us could even comprehend. Less than two weeks later we would be even more astonished when over 1200 crowded into downtown Minerva for the public premiere of the film at the Roxy Theatre. We took ticket requests through our Gmail account, which quickly led to a near shutdown of our account as hundreds (yes, literally) of ticket requests flooded in.

What happened after the film’s official release is something of a mystery. The team fell apart due to creative control, sides were taken, and the team split. Thankfully, a plan was in place and Small Town Monsters lives on. Looking back, the making of the movie was everything you could want from a film production. We had fun, we learned a lot about the story and about filmmaking, and we grew as people. For that, I’ll always be grateful.

But, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t plan on revisiting/remaking this movie at some point.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01314645568124791425noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5357625198532716019.post-88134039926473349432016-02-06T14:00:00.000-08:002018-05-25T07:47:24.367-07:00Boggy Creek Monster Prep: Cinetics Axis360

In addition, I'll also be posting gear reviews and Brandon Dalo will be stopping by for the occasional post about his wonderful film scores.

We hope you'll follow along with this blog and check in regularly as we continue to update. There is never a dull day working on these films and the process that goes on getting them made is, for me, just as interesting as the stories that are featured in them.

Thanks for stopping by.
